I spiced this up by adding a couple of cheeses, one of which was a smoky cheddar, threw in some bacon, doubled the crumb topping and man what a winner. My family loved it! Thanks for the this recipe, I would tell other’s don’t be afraid to add a few things dependent on YOUR individual families unique tastes. I couldn’t imagine a better comfort food. This will be a staple favorite at our house and I have to say one of those that’s almost better on the leftover days. Great recipe.

Can this be made ahead early in the day, then refrigerate? I would get it out to bring it to room temperature, the cook in the evening (if it would be OK)

Planned to make this for a men’s homeless shelter’s dinner… but forgot the potatoes when I went to the store. (!) Decided to try it with instant potato flakes, adding some boiling water to the warm milk, and a sprinkle of bacon bits to the potatoes. In a pinch, you learn to be creative!!
