This month we celebrated my sweet boy Dylan‘s 7th birthday.
I have had him since he was a pup and he is by far the sweetest, friendliest dog I have ever owned. 
Unlike his big brother Charlie, Dylan isn’t a huge fan of lobster, he prefers fruits and veggies, his favorite being apples. So for his birthday we celebrated with some fresh, crisp apples and a stuffed toy (which happened to be a lobster, so obviously Charlie stole it from him immediately). Then tonight we decided to clean off the ol’ grill ( I am still in a grilling mood since our Florida trip) and make hot dogs. I am not a huge hot dog fan but every now and then a grilled dog is pretty tasty (and Ava and Ashton love them, of course). We bought good quality turkey dogs (Warning: pork is a big NO for dogs) and I decided to make fun Hot Doggie Sandwich Bites for dinner. I saw these sandwiches a while back in a kids mag and thought they were the cutest thing! The pups and Ava loved them and they were pretty easy to make too. So celebrate National Pet Month this May and make these cute sandwiches for your family pet (and kids too!).

Hot Doggie Sandwich

Makes 4 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 4 turkey hot dogs cooked
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices cheese
  • 12 black beans
  • mustard and ketchup and any other toppings you like

Instructions

  • To assemble: Cut out cheese shapes (2 eyes and 2 ears) using a pairing knife. I used a 1/4 tsp scoop to trace 2 round eyes for each sandwich and just cut out floppy ear shapes for ears.
  • "Glue" shapes onto top buns with a dab of mustard or ketchup.
  • Add beans for pupils and a nose.
  • Add cooked hotdogs in between top and bottom buns, adding ketchup and mustard if you'd like.
Hope you and your pets enjoy your Hot Doggie Sandwich Bites as much as Dylan and Charlie did!

She watched her Daddy grilling from the living room and asked to go “out”!

Remember: DO NOT feed your dogs pork hotdogs. Pork can cause Trichinosis, a food borne disease caused by an intestinal roundworm. We found this out the hard way when my parent’s dog had a bite of pork chop and was deathly ill. Be careful what you feed to your pets!

Ava liked giving the dogs their treats too. Then she got hers! 
 
Celebrate National Pet Month by taking your pet on extra walks or to the dog park if the weather is nice like it is here! Give them extra treats and cuddles to show them you how much you care! They deserve it and will sure appreciate it!
