We love Pizza Night at our house. Sometimes we order in, sometimes we go out, and sometimes we make our own. Homemade pizza night is always a good time and my daughter especially loves making the dough, rolling it out, and adding her own toppings. Even though it may sound intimidating, pizza dough is pretty simple to make and work with. For this recipe I decided to try baking my pizza in a skillet and a heart shaped baking dish {for Valentine’s, of course} instead of the more traditional round baking sheet. The result was a softer, thicker crust that cooked up fast and tasted great! Hope you enjoy these Sweetheart Skillet Pizzas!

Sweetheart Skillet Pizzas

Makes 2 large skillets

Ingredients

For the pizza dough:

  • 2 1/2 cups flour all white or mix white and wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
  • 3 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 cup very warm water

For the skillet pizza:

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Pizza sauce
  • Mozzarella cheese shredded
  • toppings of choice

Instructions

For pizza dough:

  • Combine yeast, sugar, 1 cup flour, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Add the warm water and oil and mix.
  • Stir in remaining flour slowly until dough is soft but not sticky.
  • Knead until smooth.
  • Let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes before making the pizza.

For the skillet pizza:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • Split the dough in half.
  • Coat a large oven safe skillet with oil.
  • Take half the pizza dough and press it into the bottom of the skillet.
  • Add pizza sauce, spreading to cover.
  • Now top with shredded cheese.
  • Finally, add your toppings.
  • I cut out heart shaped pepperonis with a mini cookie cutter and added additional toppings like spinach, olives, and onions.
  • Bake for 16-18 minutes or until bubbly and golden.
  • Let cool slightly then using a spatula remove pizzas to a cutting board.
  • Cut into squares or triangles using a pizza cutter and serve warm.
  • I hope you and your sweethearts enjoy this delicious homemade pizza!

To make the dough: Combine yeast, sugar, 1 cup flour, and salt in a large bowl.
Add the warm water and oil and mix.
Stir in remaining flour slowly until dough is soft but not sticky.
Knead until smooth.
I like to use 1/2 white all purpose flour and 1/2 whole wheat flour.
Coat a large oven safe skillet with oil.  I used my cast iron.
I also used my heart shaped baking dish since it was Valentine’s week.
Split the dough in half.
Take half the pizza dough and press it into the bottom of the skillet.

Same thing goes for your baking dish/es.
Press the dough on the bottom to cover.
Now add pizza sauce, spreading to cover. Add as much as you like.
Top with a good handful of shredded Mozzarella cheese.
Now time for toppings.
I added toppings like spinach, olives, and onions for my skillet pizza.
Then, since it’s Valentine’s week,
I cut out heart shaped pepperonis with a mini cookie cutter.
Place those all over the top of your pizzas.
Now time to bake in a 450 degree oven for 16-18 minutes until lightly browned.
I just love how cute these pizzas are!
Ava has a blast decorating them with me.
Take out of the oven and let cool slightly.
Remove from the skillet/baking dishes and slice or
leave whole if it is a personal size pizza.
A hot, bubbly slice of Skillet Pizza Pie!
Serve this any day of the year to your sweethearts
and they will see and taste the love!
