Crock-Pot Brown Sugar Pineapple Ham

When my husband requested baked ham for our Christmas in August celebration, I knew I wanted to make a tasty version for him, but since I had a huge dinner to make on my own, I wanted to make it as easy as possible. So, as it often does, my Crock-Pot came to the rescue!

You are going to love this brown sugar and pineapple crusted ham. It’s so tender it just falls apart and the best thing- just throw it in the Crock-Pot for six hours and forget about it!

Also check out my newest ham recipe: Crock-Pot Blackberry Glazed Ham.

I created these delicious Leftover Holiday Ham Baked Sliders with my leftovers from Christmas dinner including this Crock-Pot Ham, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce.

I found this delicious spiral ham at Sam’s Club.
I have used ham anywhere from 3-7 lbs for this recipe.
Lay a base of brown sugar on the bottom of the Crock-Pot.

Place your cooked ham on top of the sugar.
Pour a can of pineapple tidbits with juice on top of the ham. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours.

Look at this juicy, sweet ham!

This is going to be a recipe I use for many holidays to come.

This ham made my Christmas in August dinner a lot easier and my husband

is still raving about the delicious ham!

I came across your recipe today looking for a ham glaze that doesn't include mustard. I'm trying something similar to this, except not in the crockpot. Wish me luck!

Add dry mustard powder to the sugar … gives a spicy mustard glaze.

I'm not a very experienced cook , but i have a question about a Pre-Cooked Ham & 6 – 8 Hours time in the Crockpot / Slowcooker. Would this not dry the Ham Out ?

Oh yes! We made this today exactly as the recipe stated.
The ham was far too dry and tough.

You could try adding another juice like apple or substitute water or broth. I would say 1 cup.

I made it for Christmas and it was okay, but I won’t make it for Christmas again 😔 I prefer mine.
It was okay, just not for a Christmas holiday meal and it wasn’t crispy like recipe stated it was tender but dry on top.
Followed the recipe to the letter 🤔 so not sure what happened.
          Was bummed 😔

Sorry it was not your favorite holiday ham! Mine is always juicy but you could also baste with the juices a couple times. Also, as mentioned, you can pop it in the oven under the broiler for a few minutes to crisp the top.

We made this for Christmas 2020 and yes after 4 hours on low it dried out what was a great ham. It made the ham tough. The crockpot was at least half full of juices.

So sorry that happened. I have made this almost 100 times and it always comes juicy and tender! Not sure if your lid was not on completely? I know that it can dry out that way. I have tented it with aluminum foil when it is too large for the lid to fit properly and it still comes out great.

If I use a whole boneless ham will the flavor get into the ham? Or should I have it sliced and then tie it together so it doesn't fall apart. That way the flavor will be able to get into the ham. Also, we like honey ham so if I put some honey in there will it get a honey flavor as well?

I was wondering how you got the nice crusty outer shell on the ham. Did you bake in oven at 375 for 15 to 20 mins, or does it get that way just "sitting"? Also, I don't see the previous comments about "no bone" in ham! What am I missing?

You really don't need to be putting down people for having questions. They may not be as experienced cooks as some of us, maybe they don't know much about slow cookers, or any other number of issues. You're first sentence is entirely uncalled for.

People need to think back to the first time they tried something new. A ham is not cheap, so you don't want to ruin it. What's wrong with asking questions if it's not clear to YOU? This is what's wrong with the internet—it's full of people who can't wait to put others down.

Sure, absolutely no problem with asking questions that haven't been addressed, either in messages or recipe text and/or pictures. Please just make sure that you watch the video, read the text, etc. Let's remember that others are spending their precious time posting these recipes and have included quite a lot of information in order to help us re-create them. Let's invest OUR time in reading and watching…creating an investment that in the end, produces something good and positive. While I agree that we can sometimes be too sensitive, I also feel that we tend to want others to do most of the work while we just reap the benefits. Nice recipe! 🙂

i hate to be a spoil sport but a browned crunchy coating on a ham like the one in the cover photo can not be obtained by cooking solely in a slow cooker. The boneless ham does appear to have been cooked in a slow cooker with pineapple as it is paler without brown crust. A skillet, hot oven, grill or broiler is required for significant browning. The liquid from pineapple tendsto prevent crunchy browned crusts.

You could use just pineapple juice, or even coke or rootbeer. Someone else mentioned they've used cherry juice…maybe maraschino cherry juice?

SUPER amazing meal! VERY easy! It tasted GREAT! It turned out super moist, super tender, WHOLE family loved it! I had a normal meijers pre-cooked half, 3.85lbs at the low on 6 hours. PERFECT! It wasn't sliced, but it turned out amazing and I was impressed! All of it was eaten. 🙂 Many compliments and happy tummy's!

Was your ham presliced? If not, did you lay your ham face down like she has in her picture? If it was not presliced did the flavors get into all of the ham?

This is how I've made my hams for years. It's a great, simple recipe and you just can't mess it up. For those that don't understand smoked, pre-cooked, or anything else about hams, just ask your meat market manager to explain them to you.

I use 3-section "meal containers" with covers and freeze any leftovers…perfect for reheating when you're not in the mood to cook, or for filling the freezer…"cook once and done"…LOL…also cube any leftover ham and add to mac 'n cheese casseroles, macaroni salads, potato salads, soups, etc. etc….the possibilities are endless!!!

I have been doing my hams like this for years. I just haven't tried it in the crock Pot but have done so in the oven. I have used both regular and pre-cooked hams, sliced and unsliced. If you want a little bit of spice added to it my mother use to use …brown sugar, pineapple rings( 4 – 8 depending on ham size) , stud the pineapple rings with 3 – 4 whole cloves per ring and for a little added taste and color a maraschino cherrie in the center of the pineapple rings. bake this way about 4 hours or more or if you like you can us a crock pot as with the other recipe.

How about I explain a bit about ham… Ham starts out as pork. Technically, it comes from the leg/thigh but people make ham from other parts of the pork too… I make my own from the loin (think: unsliced pork chop). To turn pork into ham, it must be cured and oftentimes smoked. When I make it, I cure my loin twice, once in a wet cure which is basically salt, sugar, hot sauce and water. It sits in the wet cure for 48 hours. Then I remove it, dry it, and coat it in salt and pepper. I put it back in the fridge for at least 72 hours. I then take it out to my smoker and smoke it with applewood for 2-4 hours. By then, it's fully cooked. There is an art to curing and everyone does it different but those are the basics.

Some people who have cooked for years just don't have patience for the ones who are just learning and trying to understand. Ignore the remarks, too much negativity is what is wrong in this world. I did the same thing! The only ham available was a large, shank cut that was too big for the crock pot. I had my heart set on this recipe, and didn't want to chop up the ham to make it fit, so I tried cooking it with foil wrapped tightly around the top of the slow cooker. Big mistake! Under those conditions, it did not generate enough moisture for the slow cooker method. Eventually I cut it in half to fit with the lid on all the way. From that time on, the ham cooked the way it was supposed to but the end result was tough and overcooked. Lesson learned! Make sure the lid fits correctly!

Ham in pictures seems to be placed in crockpot cut side down, but a good portion of the ham is not submerged in the pineapple juice, so I'm guessing that during the cooking process, the exposed portion of the ham will absorb the juice, and remain moist and juicy, and NOT end up dry and tough. Just wanted to make sure I was understanding this correctly, due to the fact that I didn't see any other comment in reference to this. Thanks.

You can adjust the amount of brown sugar according to the size of your ham. In a bowl mix about a cup of brown sugar, pineapple juice from a can of pineapple rings, ground cloves (about 1tsp or so according to your taste preference), and Kentucky Bourbon. Secure pineapple rings to ham and brush the glaze all over the ham and bake accordingly. Easy and delicious.

Can't wait to try this for Thanksgiving. The hams we have seen are around six pounds. Would this work or would we need to cut ham in half? In the pictures there seems to be room for more ham. Would too much juice be created for a six quart crock pot? Would we need to double other ingredients for a six pound ham?

In the picture you show your ham and state it is 3 lbs. A 3 lb ham is quite small and most hams I see for sale are between 6-8 lbs. In the comments I see people refer to Hams around this size, and I even read a comment where you mentioned using a 7 lb. ham. Is your recipe specifically for a 3 lb. ham? Should I double it for a ham twice the size? I have a 6 quart crockpot. I am assuming a 6-8 lb. ham can fit in that without problem. I would like to do this for Thanksgiving. But I want to make sure I get it right.

Hi Diane. I have updated that. The first time I made this I used the Sam's Club smaller 3 lb ham. However, the last few times I have made it I have been cooking for many more people so I used between 5-7lb hams. All fit in my biggest Crockpot and I used the same amount of sugar and pineapple b/c the ham itself has a lot of juice too. It always comes out tender and with a nice crust!

Pretty sweet tasting though if you like ham that way. I'm not sure why it's done in a crock pot, maybe to free up the oven if you don't do it ahead? It seemed to me baking in the oven would produce the same results. Question: Is it to be basted at all during cook time? It could have been more moist.

Hi, Norway calling! Preparing for Christmas, and I bought a raw, brined ham. My American husband likes his ham made with brown sugar and pineapples, so this sounds like the perfect recipe, but never tried making it a crockpot. Would the time be sufficient for a raw ham too, or do I have to add more time? To me, 6hrs sounds like a really looooong time for a pre-cooked one, but then I'm no expert. Wouldn't want t ruin an expensive ham mid Christmas!

I tried this last week in preparation for Christmas, I struggled with how salty the ham came out, I felt like the juices ran out and the salt stayed behind, would love any tips to reduce the saltiness of it. We also found the ham to be very dry, I am not sure if my crockpot runs hot or not, but 4 hours was too much. I read on another site that using a Bone In non cut ham yields a less dry ham so I am going to try that.

Has anyone made gravy from the crockpot leftover liquid? I usually make gravy from the ham pan drippings. I am curious how it turns out using the sugary pineapple and brown sugar liquid?

      Hi Venessa,
So glad you love this recipe! Most hams I have seen are precooked. If you use an uncooked ham I would had a few more hours and check the doneness.

I bought a 7.05lb smoked ham thats fully cooked for some odd reasons the supermarkets I went to did not have pre-cooked. Is it still ok to slow cook it for 6 hours? I am making this tonight. Merry Christmas!

I have made this recipe for the past 3 yrs now – Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas and it always disappears faster than the turkey my sister insists on lol. My nephew in law says this is the ONLY way he will eat ham anymore – I think that is a great review on this recipe too. In the past I have had trouble fitting the ham in my 6 QT slow cooker and out of desparation I put it in a roasting pan covered with 2 layers of heavy duty aluminum foil and popped it in the oven at like 275 F for the same amount of time and it came out beautiully too. The recipe is extremely easy to follow if anyone takes the time to read it through, and they will end up with a very juicy delicious ham when they’re done! As a side note I have cut down on the amount of brown sugar by about half lately and it still comes out lovely.

I think it would work just fine. The ham, pineapple, and sugar make plenty of juice so mine never dries out. I would cut the time in half since you are just reheating.

Hi, I’ve made this ham twice and it was a hit. For some odd reason last year and this year I am having a hard time finding a pre cooked. If I buy fully cooked, will that be fine? Should I cook it same amount of time or for less since it’s fully cooked?

Yes, I used a cooked ham and it just warms it and adds the nice glaze in the slow cooker. Try a couple hours and add more time if needed.

Sure. Since the ham is precooked and boneless you just want to warm it with the glaze. I prefer the slowcooker so you can pour the sugar and pineapple on top but a roaster would warm it well. Probably low around 325-350 for a couple hours.
