Summer Watermelonade and Let’s Support Team USA!

This summer we, as a family, have excitedly watched the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. We are a patriotic military family and we love cheering on Team USA in every sports category.
Ava’s favorite sport is swimming so naturally she loves watching Team USA compete in the swimming category. Her favorite Olympian is swimmer David Boudia and since she started watching him compete this year she has learned about teamwork, determination, and setting goals. Ava has been swimming since she was a baby and now she has decided she is going to compete in the Olympics one day too!

Since we are out in the Louisiana summer heat, it is important to always stay hydrated, even when swimming! So I made a delicious Watermelonade for the girls and I to sip on during our pool days. Not only is it tasty and a fun bright color that my girls love, but it also cools you down and the mint ice cubes mixed with the lemon and watermelon are a delicious flavor combo.
We love it and so will you!

Let’s power their dreams. Buy the brands that support Team USA
by shopping for P&G products at Walmart.

In our little town, we shop for just about everything at Walmart. I have always been a big fan of P&G
brands including Pampers, Tide, and Head and Shoulders and now I love them even more because when you buy P&G brands at Walmart, you support Team USA!

I use many P&G products but my favorite lately has been
Head & Shoulders® Classic Clean Shampoo. I love that it not only smells great and leaves my hair soft and tangle free but it also gets rid of my bothersome itchy and flaky scalp.
Get more info here.

This summer Ava swam in the pool every chance she got.
The excitement of watching the Olympics, especially her favorite sport, swimming, made her want to get out and “practice” as she calls it.
Watch for my girl in the Olympics in the near future!
P&G products are available at Walmart for an everyday low price.
Find them here.
Ava’s first time in the pool at age 5 months
during our vacation to Florida!
She quickly started loving the water and always wanted to be in the pool!
My water babe is one cool girl!
Daddy helped her learn to float and kick her legs.
Ava was swimming in no time!
We may have a future Olympian here folks!
She even does tricks!
All summer long we play and swim in the pool.
Ava loves watching the Olympics at home with her Daddy and her favorite sport is, you guess it, swimming!
Ava’s little sister Stella is following in her big sister’s footsteps.
She loves the water and will be swimming like a fish soon too!
Where do my water babies get their love of water?
From their Mama!

Summer Watermelonade

Ingredients:

Makes 4 mason jar drinks
  • 5 cups cubed watermelon, about 1/2 a watermelon
  • 4 slices of thin watermelon wedges, for garnish
  • 1 cup lemon juice
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 cups water
  • 2-3 springs of fresh mint, finely chopped

Directions:

  1. To make mint ice cubes, add finely chopped mint to two ice cube molds.
  2. Fill with water and place in freezer until solid.
  3. In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups water and 1 cup sugar to a boil.
  4. Stir until sugar dissolves completely then pour into a pitcher.
  5. Stir in lemon juice and additional 4 cups of water.
  6. Add watermelon to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
  7. Push the watermelon though a mesh strainer and discard watermelon “meat”. This is optional if you like a chunkier fruit filled lemonade add all the watermelon.
  8. Add watermelon juice to the pitcher and stir.
  9. Chill until ready to serve.
  10. To serve: fill glasses with a hand full of mint ice cubes and pour chilled watermelonade on top. Add a straw and top with a thin wedge of watermelon.

I use about 3 large springs of fresh mint to make the ice cubes.

Finely chop the mint.

Add chopped mint to two ice cube molds.

Fill with water and place in freezer until solid.

Once frozen you have cute fresh mint ice cubes to chill and flavor your summer drinks.

Time for watermelon! We bought a medium sized watermelon and cut in half.
Chop half of the watermelon into cubes – you should have about 5 cups.
For the remaining half I slice 3-4 thin wedges for garnishes then my
husband cut the rest into sticks for easy holding and eating for the kiddos.
Add watermelon to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
Push the watermelon though a mesh strainer and discard watermelon “meat”.
*This is optional if you like a chunkier fruit filled lemonade, add all the watermelon.
To make the simple syrup bring two cups water and one cup sugar to a boil.
Stir until sugar dissolves completely then pour into a pitcher.
Squeeze 1 cup of fresh lemon juice.
Stir in lemon juice and additional 4 cups of water.
Pour the lemonade and the watermelon juice into a pitcher and stir.
Chill until ready to serve.
To serve: add a handful of mint ice cubes to a small mason jar or cup.
Pour chilled watermelonade on top.
Add a straw and top with a thin wedge of watermelon.
This fun drink was a hit with my little foodie
and cooled her down on those hot summer days!
Watermelonade is the perfect refreshing drink for a day at the pool.
Happy summer and go Team USA!

🍓 Today is National Pick Strawberries Day. Going to local farms and picking fresh produce is one of our favorite family traditions. We were lucky enough to go strawberry picking at @eckertfarms last weekend. It was the biggest farm we have ever been to and quite a memorable experience! We left with a basket full of fresh juicy berries, strawberry cider and pastries from the market, and soaking wet clothes (but smiles on our faces). I'll share more about the hail storm that hit us in the middle of the field later... ⛈️😨 #nationalpickstrawberriesday #farmfresh #strawberry #eckerts #farmtotable #farmlife #illinois #springtime #familyfun #eckertfarms #eckertsmemories
