Blueberry Barbecue Smokies

I have shared my favorite -out of the box- savory Wild Blueberry recipes this week for Moms Meet {greenmomsmeet.com} and Wild Blueberries {wildblueberries.com}. I wanted to end my Wild Blueberry posts with a bang, so today I am sharing this amazing appetizer: Blueberry Butter Glazed Smokies Sausages. It’s another easy recipe featuring my homemade Wild Blueberry Barbecue Sauce. Be sure to check out my other Wild Blueberry savory recipes!

Why go wild for Wild Blueberries?

• Wild Blueberries have a more intense flavor than regular blueberries. Wild Blueberry plants are more genetically diverse with thousands of interlocking plants spreading and interlocking naturally across fields over thousands of years. That diversity is what gives Wild Blueberries their complex and delicious flavor—an extraordinary mix of tart and sweet.
 • Wild Blueberries have two times the antioxidant capacity of the larger cultivated blueberries. A growing body of research shows the potential health benefits of Wild Blueberries including gut health, diabetes, cancer, and brain health.
 • 99% of the Wild Blueberry crop is frozen fresh at harvest, which locks in their nutrition and taste.
 • Wild Blueberries are called “wild” because they are not planted— they have occurred naturally in barrens and fields in Maine and Eastern Canada for 10,000 years.

Blueberry Butter Glazed Bacon Wrapped Smokies Sausages

Ingredients

  • 1 14 oz pkg Lil Smokies
  • 1 pkg Maple bacon cut into thirds
  • 1/2 stick 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 3/4-1 cup Blueberry Barbecue Sauce recipe below

Blueberry Barbecue Sauce:

  • Makes about 2 cups
  • 2 1/2 cups frozen wild blueberries thawed
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1-2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 4 cloves garlic pressed
  • 1/2 small yellow onion diced
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder

Instructions

  • For the barbecue sauce: add all sauce ingredients to a large saucepan.
  • Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring often.
  • Turn heat to med-low and let simmer for 10-15 minutes until thickened.
  • Taste and add more brown sugar if you would like it a little sweeter.
  • Carefully pour into a food processor or blender and pulse until smooth.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Cut the bacon into thirds and wrap around each smokie. Secure with a toothpick.
  • Arrange smokies in a single layer on an aluminum foil lined baking sheet.
  • In a bowl mix together melted butter and 1/2 cup of blueberry barbecue sauce.
  • Brush the mixture on each wrapped little smokie.
  • Bake 15-20 minutes
  • Raise the oven to 400 degrees for another 5 minutes to crisp up the bacon.
  • Remove from oven and remove smokies to a paper towel lined plate.
  • Brush smokies with approx 1/4-1/2 cup of Blueberry Barbecue Sauce {amount depends on how much you want to coat them}.
  • Serve warm and watch them disappear!

Prepare the Wild Blueberry Barbecue Sauce. Save leftover sauce for Crock-Pot Blueberry Barbecue Chicken Wings. Mix together 1/2 cup sauce with 1/2 stick melted butter.
Cut bacon into thirds.
Wrap bacon around each little smokie sausage.
Secure with a toothpick.
Arrange on a aluminum foil lined baking sheet.
Pour blueberry butter mixture on top of smokies.
Brush over smokies making sure to coat each one.
Bake 15-20 minutes at 375 degrees.
Raise the oven to 400 degrees for another 5 minutes to crisp up the bacon.
Remove to a papertowel lined plate.
Brush blueberry barbecue sauce on top of smokies and serve warm.
You better grab a couple for yourself because as soon as you put this
appetizer on the table, they disappear!

🍽 Yesterday we enjoyed lunch at NCAL+H2O, an upscale seafood gem of a restaurant in downtown Rolla. It was a delicious meal and everything this Florida girl has been craving!
🐟 We started with an order of amazing Tuna Poke Nachos then shared a Grilled Shrimp Club sandwich with fries and a tasty salad with house garlic parm dressing. We couldn't stop there so we also split a bowl of cioppino, which was chock full of fresh seafood. Next time I want to try their Parmesan Halibut or Seafood Pasta!
❤ If you are looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate an anniversary or have a quiet date night (or day date like us) check out @saltwaterrollamo !
⭐ Lunch was courtesy of @rolladowntown. I was a winner of $100 in downtown dollars in their Tis the Season of Giving contest!
