DIY Upcycled Bird Feeder

Looking for an activity to use up all your extra toilet paper rolls? Because with this quarantine we all have extra toilet paper right now, right?
I save our paper rolls for crafts with my kids and now that it is springtime our favorite way to upcycle instead of throw away the empty toilet paper rolls is make bird feeders!
All you need to add is peanut butter, birdseed, and some string and you have a homemade bird feeder {let’s be honest it’s a squirrel feeder too}.
We hang ours around our back yard deck and the girls love watching from our kitchen as the birds visit and eat. Scroll down for the easy directions.

What you need:

  • empty toilet paper rolls
  • birdseed
  • peanut butter
  • plastic knives, for spreading
  • yarn or string, for hanging
  • paper plates

Directions:

  1. Pour birdseed on plates, covering the bottom.
  2. Using a plastic knife, spread the peanut butter in a thick layer all over all sides of the toilet paper rolls.
  3. Roll the peanut butter covered toilet paper roll in the birdseed, coating completely.
  4. Let set and finish remaining rolls.
  5. Loop string around the rolls and knot at the top.
  6. Hang outside on a deck, limb, or bush and watch the birds enjoy!

The girls and I first made this craft during a afternoon workshop at our local military community center.
I love how focused they are on their projects!

Later in the spring we made the birdfeeders again at home!
Stella likes anything with peanut butter- even crafts!
Another fun way to spend an afternoon at home!
Start by spreading the peanut butter in a thick layer all over all sides of the toilet paper rolls.
Roll the peanut butter covered toilet paper roll in the birdseed.
Coat completely.
Let set and finish remaining rolls.
Loop string around the rolls and knot at the top.
Hang outside on a deck, limb, or bush and watch the birds enjoy!
This makes a great nature or science project for homeschool and craft time!
My girls also get a kick out of seeing all the creatures come visit their bird feeders like the colorful birds, funny squirrels, and cute chipmunks!

What a fun recycled craft for kids. It is great for them to learn to reuse things in new ways and to get to feed the birds all at once:)
