Croque Monsieur Sandwich | Disney’s Be Our Guest Copycat Recipe

It’s Disney Week here on the blog and today I wanted to share one of my favorite sandwich recipes with y’all, that just so happens to be served at Disney World. Croque Monsieur
is a decadent French style grilled or baked ham and cheese sandwich that is served at Be Our Guest restaurant in Magic Kingdom.
You can make this sandwich open faced and baked or as a traditional grilled sandwich the way Disney does. It usually comes with a rich bechamel sauce on top but for an easy shortcut I made a spread with sour cream and Dijon mustard like the restaurant serves. I hope you enjoy this recipe and my pictures from the amazing Be Our Guest castle restaurant!
It really is one of my favorite restaurants EVER.
Lots of menu choices for lunch.
Tip- Use the Disney App to get a dining reservation. Dinner is hard to get but lunch you can usually score a reservations 20-30 days ahead.

I have been wanting to eat at Be Our Guest for years and could never score a reservation.
But this solo trip- I got lucky!
Disney goes all out like they always do!
The Beast’s castle is amazing. Every design is stunning.
My Be Our Guest meal included the Croque Monsieur sandwich with green beans. I substituted green beans for fries and was glad I did! Seriously, some of the best green beans I have ever tasted. I also had a cup of French Onion Soup and a Grey Stuff cupcake for dessert.
I knew I had to try the French Onion soup and boy am I glad I did!
It was full of flavor and lots of cheese!
After my big ol’ lunch I was stuffed but the Grey Stuff was calling my name!
So I ordered a Grey Stuff cupcake. It was moist and delicious and beautifully presented.
Don’t believe me – ask the dishes!

The restaurant is certainly as large as a castle and has three dining rooms that can serve a total of 550 guests! For this visit I dined in the Ballroom.

There is also a stunning Rose Gallery room.
Then there is the dark and mysterious West Wing of the Beast’s castle where you can hear thunder and see the enchanted rose on display!

I didn’t try to match my food- I promise!

If you can’t get reservations for Be Our Guest or you are looking for another spot for a meal or snack try Gaston’s Tavern, right next door. Lefou’s Brew is a must try for the whole family!
There is a hilarious fountain out front and Gaston himself is usually around signing autographs.
By the way, I rocked this Gaston bow on my magic band just in case I saw the man himself!

Ingredients:

Makes 4 sandwiches
  • 8 slices brioche or country wheat bread
  • 8 slices ham
  • 4 slices Gruyere cheese {or 1 cup shredded}
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • butter/oil, for grilling

Directions:

  1. You can either grill this sandwich or broil it {both options pictured below}.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together sour cream and mustard.
  3. Spread about 1 tbsp of the mixture evenly over each bread slice.
  4.  Add 2 slices of ham on 4 of the bread slices.
  5. Spread more of the sour cream mixture on top of the ham.
  6. Add a slice of cheese {or about 1/4 cup shredded} on top of each.
  7. If broiling, you can place in the oven open faced and broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted and it is golden.
  8.  If you are grilling, like Be Our Guest, then top the sandwiches with the remaining bread slices, spread side down.
  9. I then spread butter {or even more of the sour cream mixture} on top of the bread.
  10.  Add butter or oil to a large skillet, then add sandwiches, 2 at a time.
  11. Grill the sandwiches over medium heat, turning them once, and cook until they are golden brown on both sides.
  12. Transfer the sandwiches to a plate and repeat with the remaining sandwiches.
  13. Serve warm with a side of green beans or pomme frites {fries} like Be Our Guest Restaurant.

An authentic Croque Monsieur uses Gruyere cheese, sliced or shredded.
In a small bowl, stir together sour cream and mustard.
Spread about 1 tbsp of the mixture evenly over each bread slice.
I use either country wheat {Be Our Guest way} or sweet brioche bread.
Add 2 slices of ham on 4 of the bread slices.
Spread more of the sour cream mixture on top of the ham.

Add a slice of cheese {or about 1/4 cup shredded} on top of each.
If broiling, you can place in the oven open faced.
Broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted and it is golden.
You can also fry an egg and add it on top.
It is called a Croque Madame sandwich.
If you are grilling, like Be Our Guest, then top the sandwiches with the remaining bread slices, spread side down. I then spread butter {or even more of the sour cream mixture} on top of the bread.
Add butter or oil to a large skillet, then add sandwiches, 2 at a time.
Grill the sandwiches over medium heat, turning them once,
and cook until they are golden brown on both sides.
Transfer the sandwiches to a plate and repeat with the remaining sandwiches.
Serve warm with a side of green beans or pommes frites {fries} like Be Our Guest Restaurant.
So many amazing photo ops in the castle! I could explore it all day!
Have you been to Be Our Guest? What is your favorite thing to order?

🦀 Check out our lunch yesterday at my parents favorite local spot, @soiasianbistro . We tried a variety of items off of their massive updated menu.
🍣 The sushi was by far the best thing we ordered. Another must try is the Shiso Mono appetizer, which is tempura fried Japanese basil leaves stuffed with spiced tuna.
🍤 We also ordered cucumber salad, pork ramen, udon noodles, and chicken katsu curry. All were tasty and big enough to share with the sushi appetizer.
🍜 I recommend checking out Soi Bistro if you are in town and enjoy fresh seafood and Asian dishes like we do. But save it for a date night or special occasion b/c their price point was pretty high for a casual meal. ❤

Happy Mardi Gras! We enjoyed a delicious Cajun inspired meal tonight at home. We started with Shrimp and Grits and ended with Bananas Foster to share. We may not live in Louisiana anymore but we can still celebrate #FatTuesday ! Here's hoping the parades will be back next year. 📿❤ #mardigras2020 #bananasfoster #whatsfordinner #mardigras

It's one of those days...furnance went out (but was fixed), kids took over my bed, husband had to leave early for work, dog barked non stop, and it's a snow day... again. But the sun is shining, the kids are happy, and I'm stocked up on coffee and new books. So it's not so bad after all. #staypositive
