OK, so we all have that one friend who is raunchy and crazy and keeps you laughing {and blushing, in my case!} all the time, right? Well, Jennifer is that friend to me and I am lucky to have her in my life! She is a fellow EOD wife here in Leesville and in the last couple years I have lived here, we have celebrated and supported each other through many milestones, including both of us having babies, our husband’s deploying, and fun birthdays and holidays. In honor of Jen’s birthday a few days ago I wanted to share this decadent Southern recipe with y’all. Because if Jennifer is anything, she is Southern born and bred. She makes the best Sweet Tea and I could eat a whole tray of her Deviled Eggs! She was sweet enough to share her Mama’s Chocolate Gravy recipe with me and that means I get to share it with y’all along with my fluffy Honey Butter Cream Biscuits.
Enjoy this recipe and Happy Birthday Jennifer!

Southern Honey Butter Cream Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy

Makes 6-7 biscuits and 2 cups of gravy

Ingredients

For the biscuits:

  • 1 3/4 cup self rising flour
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp butter melted
  • 1 tbsp honey

For the Chocolate Gravy:

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 4 Tbs flour
  • 2 cups milk 2% or whole works best
  • 4 tbsp butter 1/2 stick

Instructions

For the biscuits:

  • Preheat oven to 500 degrees.
  • Spray a baking sheet with non stick spray.
  • In a large bowl mix together flour and heavy cream until a dough ball forms.
  • Dust your counter with self rising flour and add your dough ball.
  • Fold and pat the dough a couple times in flour until it is no longer sticky and then roll out (using your hands or a rolling pin) to 1/2 inch thick. You should get 3 biscuits the first time then re-roll and get 3 more. Try not to handle the dough very much and don't roll it too thin! These are fluffy, thick biscuits!
  • Using a large biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits and place on baking sheet.
  • If you want the sides soft, place the biscuits side by side so they touch. If you want the edges slightly crispy ( that's how I like 'em!) space them apart.
  • In a small bowl mix warm melted butter with honey and using a basting brush, brush on the tops of each biscuit.
  • Bake for 8 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and brush with the remaining honey butter. It will absorb almost immediately into the hot biscuits. Serve warm with chocolate gravy or jam {or heck how about more honey butter!}.

For the Chocolate Gravy:

  • Mix dry ingredients together in a large saucepan then whisk in milk.
  • Heat over medium high until it boils, whisking constantly.
  • Turn heat to medium and add butter. Stir until it melts and gravy has thickened.
  • Remove from heat and serve warm on top of fresh from the oven biscuits.
  • Also delicious on pound cake, fruit, and ice cream!

These biscuits couldn’t be more simple!
Just mix together heavy cream and self rising flour to form a dough.
Make sure to use self rising flour (which already has baking powder and salt mixed in) and do NOT over handle the dough!
I folded the dough a few times then rolled the dough out by hand to about 1/2 inch thick and cut out 3 or 4 biscuits using my biscuit cutter.
Then I rerolled my dough and cut out about 3 more biscuits. Try not to over handle the dough because then your biscuits will become tough.

If you don’t have a biscuit cutter a glass turned upside down works great too! Just dip the cutter or glass in a little self rising flour so it does not stick to your dough. But remember DO NOT twist your biscuit cutter! Just push down and pull up. Twisting seals off the edges and will keep your biscuits from rising.

Mix 2 tbsp warm melted butter with 1 tbsp honey.
Oh honey butter how I love you! Ever since I worked at McGuires Irish Pub in college and devoured their honey butter bread just about every day, I have been hooked!
Lay your biscuits on a greased baking sheet and brush liberally with honey butter.
If you want the sides soft, place the biscuits side by side so they
touch. If you want the edges slightly crispy (that’s how I like ’em!) space them apart.
Bake at 500 degrees for 8 minutes. They should be fluffy and golden brown and ready for more honey butter!
As soon as I take them out of the oven, I brush the remaining honey butter on top.

A few months ago, I went to Jennifer’s house to have her show me how to make her mouthwatering Chocolate Gravy.
Our two sweet girls: Ava and Laurabelle helped us in the kitchen.
Ms Laurabelle especially liked being a taste tester!
Oh yes, that is a BIG pot of chocolate! Willy Wonka would be in heaven right now!
Jennifer served hers on drop biscuits and sprinkled powdered sugar on top for more sweet goodness! YUM!

Mix dry ingredients together in a large saucepan.
Whisk in milk.
Heat over medium high until it boils, whisking constantly.
Turn heat to medium and add butter.
Stir until it melts and gravy has thickened.
Remove from heat and serve warm on top of fresh from the oven biscuits.
Also delicious on pound cake, fruit, and ice cream!
Drizzle Chocolate Gravy on warm Honey Butter Biscuits
for a decadent breakfast or rich dessert!

My birthday Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy gift basket for Jen!
