Happy Movie Monday friends!
Spring is here so this month I am sharing a egg-cellent Easter recipe inspired by my kids’ favorite Easter movie, Hop. This adorable movie features a bunny named E.B. who has dreams up being a musician but instead is next in line to be the Easter Bunny. The candy factory on Easter Island where the Easter bunny family and friends live is filled with every sweet candy creation you can imagine, so I knew I wanted to make a candy filled egg to share with y’all today.
My little loves had a blast on movie night watching Hop and snacking on their candy and chocolate egg. My little sweeties loved their sweet treat!
Check out my recipe and the link up below with other talented bloggers recipes and crafts inspired by our favorite Easter movies!

Surprise Candy Filled DIY Chocolate Easter Eggs

Makes one large chocolate egg

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips
  • assorted small Easter candy

Instructions

  • Melt half of the chocolate chips {1 cup} until smooth. I use a chocolate melter or you can use the double boiler method on the stove.
  • Using a plastic or silicone egg shaped mold {I used the Mastrad brand from Michael's Craft Store} pour or spread the warm chocolate into the inside mold cavity, covering completely in a thick even layer.
  • Chill until hardened and set, about 30 minutes depending on the size of your mold.
  • If you want the chocolate shell to be thickened you can add another layer and repeat the process {I do 2 layers}. If not, gently remove chocolate shell from the mold and place on a plate in the fridge.
  • Repeat the process to make another half egg shell.
  • Once both chocolate shells are hardened and removed from the mold, you can add candy to one half.
  • To seal halves together, put a plate in the microwave and heat for 1 minute. Place a chocolate egg half flat side down on the hot plate for a few seconds until the chocolate starts to melt.
  • Gently press the egg half onto the filled egg half to seal. Place in fridge to chill for at least 5 minutes.
  • Serve on a platter with decorative grass and sprinkles and let the kiddos break open their surprise chocolate egg and dig in!

Melt half of the chocolate chips {1 cup} until smooth.
I use a chocolate melter or you can use the double boiler method on the stove.
For these eggs I use a plastic egg shaped mold {the Mastrad brand from Michael’s Craft Store}.
Pour or spread the warm chocolate into the inside mold cavity.
Cover completely in a thick even layer.
Chill until hardened and set, about 30 minutes depending on the size of your mold.
If you want the chocolate shell to be thickened you can add another layer and repeat the process {I do 2 layers}. If not, gently remove chocolate shell from the mold and place on a plate in the fridge.
Repeat the process to make another half egg shell.
Meanwhile set out your candy. I choose edible grass and spring colored small jellybeans, candy corn, and gummy bears.
Once both chocolate shells are hardened and removed from the mold,
you can add candy to one half.
To seal halves together, put a plate in the microwave and heat for 1 minute.
Place a chocolate egg half flat side down on the hot plate for a few seconds
until the chocolate starts to melt.
Gently press the egg half onto the filled egg half to seal. Place in fridge to chill for at least 5 minutes.
Serve on a platter with decorative grass and sprinkles.
Let the kiddos break open their surprise chocolate egg and dig in!
My two didn’t waste any time!
The perfect fun treat to get us in the mood for a candy filled Easter movie!
Their faces say it all…they loved it!
My kids and I loved Hop and so will you! We found a free copy at our local library. Check it out!

Not to make a terrible pun, but what a sweet idea! I can see why your kiddos were so happy to enjoy with their movie!

    Great ideas!

So, I just tried using the small mold, and I cannot get the finished chocolate out. Did you have any issues with that? If so, how did you fix it?

    Thanks!

Hi Barbara, I had some trouble with my larger mold the first time but not the small mold! You can try popping it in the freezer for 5 minutes and then gently tapping the mold with the back of your hand and it should slip out.

Thanks for answering Nicole! I did that, but will try again. Do you spray the mold with non-stick spray?

I did try it again, leaving it in the freezer longer this time. The chocolate came out in pieces. I had to tap it pretty hard.

Oh no! So the only other recommendation I have is to make your chocolate thicker. Once it is hardened, add another layer. I did this with my large mold and it came right out. No, I did not use cooking spray with the chocolate b/c I wasn't sure if the oil would mix in with the melted chocolate.

🍽 Yesterday we enjoyed lunch at NCAL+H2O, an upscale seafood gem of a restaurant in downtown Rolla. It was a delicious meal and everything this Florida girl has been craving!
🐟 We started with an order of amazing Tuna Poke Nachos then shared a Grilled Shrimp Club sandwich with fries and a tasty salad with house garlic parm dressing. We couldn't stop there so we also split a bowl of cioppino, which was chock full of fresh seafood. Next time I want to try their Parmesan Halibut or Seafood Pasta!
❤ If you are looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate an anniversary or have a quiet date night (or day date like us) check out @saltwaterrollamo !

🥡 We tried @doordash for the first time during our stay in Branson tonight. It really saved us time and energy running around town and delivery was free! We ordered ramen, bi bim bap, and lo mein from a local Asian restaurant called Noodle 21. It was delish! Check them out if you are in the area and send me a message if you want a referral for $5 off to try #doordash ! @noodle21branson #eatlocal #branson #takeoutfood #whatsfordinner
