Being a military wife isn’t easy, especially being an EOD wife. I am nervous and scared for Ashton’s first deployment coming up this fall. Before he leaves we are trying to celebrate a few special events early since he will be gone for a while. Ava’s first birthday party is scheduled for the end of August (she turns one in October) and then of course there’s Christmas. I love Christmas and everything about it so Ashton and I decided to have a Christmas in August celebration at home for the three of us. We decorated, wrapped presents, and cooked a big Christmas dinner! It was wonderful and I will cherish the memories of that day with my husband and daughter forever!
I let Ashton pretty much tell me what he wanted for food and drinks all day. His first request: quiche for breakfast. His second: Eggnog. Now I am not a big drinker of Eggnog. I actually think I have only tried the store bought stuff once. But he loves it so I set out to make him the best dang Eggnog ever! IT just so happens I had watched an old late night episode of Ace of Cakes on Food Network a month or so ago and it was the Christmas episode. Duff made Eggnog for his staff and I had jotted down the ingredients. He didn’t go into detail on the directions so I had to wing that part. But holy cow it came out smooth and delicious, not too thick but with a little kick from the bourbon! I am converted now y’all! Eggnog Rocks!

Simple Christmas decorations for our Christmas in August celebration!
Ava had her favorite for breakfast: watermelon!
Ashton requested quiche for Christmas breakfast. I made a quick and easy quiche with onions, bacon, and mushrooms. Like quiche as much as we do? Check out my recipe for Four Cheese Broccoli Quiche .
Celebrating with Homemade Egg Nog!
Separate 4 eggs and place in two bowls.
In a large bowl, combine egg yolks and 1/3 cup sugar.
Next add grated nutmeg. I like to use fresh nutmeg and grate it with a
 small zester or microplane grater.
Now it’s time to mix in the Bourbon and whole milk!
*You can leave out the liquor and this recipe is just as tasty!
In a separate bowl mix egg whites until fluffy. I used an immersion blender to save a little time!
Finally, mix the heavy cream and tablespoon of sugar until soft peaks form and you have homemade whipped cream.

Don’t be intimidated to make homemade whipped cream! The trick is an ice cold bowl and mixer and you will have whipped cream in minutes! Just pop the bowl and mixer or whisk in the freezer about 10 minutes before you make the whipped cream.

Now just gently combine all three bowls in the large bowl with milk and egg yolks.
That’s it! You’ve got Homemade Eggnog!

Garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg and serve cold!
